Current tests are written for ImageMagick 6, but almost no relevant project depends on this version anymore, so it would be nice to move away from it.

Debian still depends on this version. And so in turn does Ubuntu. Unfortunately my own Desktop system and the Travis CI tests are running Debian and Ubuntu, respectively. I will change the tests to use imagemagick 7, once Debian and Ubuntu package that version.
